Dr. Manuel Desantes

Professor of International Private Law at the University of Alicante.

Former Vice-president of the European Patent Office (Munich) from January 2001 until December 2008, Vice Chancellor and active Chancellor of the University of Alicante from 1996 and 1998, member of the Legal Service of the European Commission from 1998 to 2001 and member of the Social Council of the City of Alicante from 2011 to 2015. In 1994 founded the Magister Lvcentinvs, Master in Intellectual Property of the University of Alicante.

Currently is a member of Counsel at the ELZABURU Law Firm, founder and Vice-president of the Spanish Design Jury, Vice-president of the Valencian Council of the European Movement, Commissioner for the government of France for the creation of the l’Ecole de l’innovation et de l’immatériel, founder and Director of the Ibero-american Network of Trademarks (RIMARCAS), Member of the Eisenhower Foundation, Member of the Boards of Directors of the Magister Lvcentinvs, Master in Intellectual Property of the University of Alicante, Member of the Administration Board of the Centre for International Studies of Intellectual Property (CEIPI), Member of the Editorial Board for the International Law Journal, Member of the Evaluation Committee of the scientific quality for the Spanish yearbook of international private law, Member of the Evaluation Committee for the quality of the Master in Intellectual Property Law and Knowledge Management of the University of Maastricht (Netherlands), Co-editor of the European Intellectual Property Institutes Network (EIPIN) Book Series, President of the Editorial Board for the ELZABURU yearbook (European jurisprudence on Intellectual Property), Member of the Academic Board the minutes of Industrial Property and Copyright, Member of the Academic Board of the Queen Mary Journal of Intellectual Property, Member of the Academic Board of RIIPAC (Journal of the Culture Heritage, Regulations, Intellectual Property).

Regularly teaches at the University of Alicante (International Private Law, PhD courses, Intellectual Property Master, and in the Master of International Commerce), visiting professor at Queen Mary College (London University, United Kingdom), University of Cambridge, Master in International Law and International Relations, Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and Master I International Studies and of the European Union at the University of Valencia.

Belongs to the International Law and International Relations Professors Association, the International Association for the Protection of the Intellectual Property (AIPPI), International Trademarks Association (INTA), and the Licensing Executive Society (LES).

Is also Founding and Member of the Patronage of the foundation for the Art of the Spanish Guitar, Member of the Trustees for the Protection of the Alicante Auditorium Foundation and founder and member of the Advisory Board of the Alberto Elzaburu Foundation, among others.

His teachings and research has a focus on International Private Law, European Union Law, Intellectual Property Law, New Technologies and Cultural Heritage Law.
